Product News. F-gas phase-down process and its alternatives

Written by  Monday, 16 December 2013 13:44

While the European F-Gas banning regulation is still under discussion, Huayi Compressor Barcelona has already started testing the most suitable refrigerant alternatives to the currently more used F-Gases (R404A and R134a) in its market segment.

HFCs were developed in the 1990s to substitute substances such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). As these substances were found to deplete the ozone layer, the Montreal Protocol establishes provisions for them to be phased-out globally.

F-gases are ozone-friendly, very energy efficient, and safe for users and the public due to their low levels of toxicity and flammability. However, most F-gases have a relatively high global warming potential (GWP). If released, HFCs remain in the atmosphere for decades and both PFCs and SF6 can stay in the atmosphere for thousands of years. This is the reason why F-gases are now under discussion and are waiting for a concrete phase-down process.

Huayi Compressor Barcelona intends to follow the refrigeration market trends by offering solutions to their customers, and it is also fully focused on environment protection. In this regard, while the European F-Gas banning regulation is still under discussion, Huayi Compressor Barcelona has already started testing the most suitable refrigerant alternatives to the currently more used F-Gases (R404A and R134a) in its market segment.

Unfortunately, it seems there will not be a single solution for all applications and compressor sizes. For Huayi Compressor Barcelona, it has been clear for many years that R290 is the most suitable solution for circuits up to 150 g of refrigerant charge. In this sense, we have developed the most complete R290 range in HMBP and LBP.

From 150 g up, we are working on getting R407F and R442A approved (both HFCs but with lower GWP). We will continue informing you about this subject with more specific details at the beginning of 2014.
